NEUROFEEDBACK (AKA) EEG BIOFEEDBACK
Zengar NeurOptimal Training Options
What is Neurofeedback (AKA) EEG Biofeedback? Neurofeedback (NFB) is an information feedback system using computer technology to teach the brain optimization skills by influencing the brain waves* through auditory and visual feedback. Neurofeedback is safe, non-invasive, and drug free. NeurOptimal is a holistic and non-linear approach to NFB training. NeurOptimal NFB provides simultaneous feedback to a wide spectrum of frequencies, dynamically providing the central nervous system (CNS) immediate feedback on what it has just done. The CNS uses this information to reorganize in ways that improves the brain's dynamic ability to be more resilient, efficient, and stable. NeurOptimal NFB trainees consistently report improved functioning in many areas as well as feeling happier. Neurofeedback is an excellent tool for re-normalization and improving self-regulation for individuals who have been traumatized or who have challenges with their moods, thoughts, or behaviors. Neurofeedback is an exciting and rapidly evolving field. Research continues to emerge and consistently supports the efficacy of neurofeedback. (see www.isnr.org for research) *What are brain waves? Brain waves are the visual representation of the electrical activity of the brain (EEG). Brainwaves are distinguished by their frequency (cycles per second) and amplitude (power). Brain waves generate various brain states for accomplishing any task from sleeping to intense concentration. Below are typical descriptions of some brain waves and states associated with those brain waves.
What conditions can neurofeedback help? Neurofeedback was originally used for seizure disorders and then expanded as a treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Attention Deficit Disorder to improve attention, focus and concentration. As the field of NFB has grown, NFB is being used for a growing list of conditions that affect both children and adults. These include:
Many people have experienced a reduction or elimination of medication (in consultation with their doctor) as a result of doing neurofeedback. Thus, neurofeedback offers a potential alternative to medication without the negative side effects of medication. The neurofeedback trainee sits in a comfortable chair with a few sensors on the head and ears. The trainee listens to music or watches a DVD while the computer provides visual and auditory feedback to the brain in the form of very brief interruptions. Trainees enjoy the training and usually report a feeling of calm and well being following a session. Training effects continue after the session is over and become more long lasting with additional training. Each session lasts about 50 minutes. How many sessions will I need? The length of training varies from person to person. Sometimes trainee's experience shifts within just a few sessions or realize that they are changing over time when they find themselves responding to old situations in new ways. Often times, sleep will normalize within the first 10 sessions. I recommend that trainee's plan for around 15-20 sessions. Thereafter, a trainee may choose to continue, take a break, or terminate training if they feel they have reached their goals. For individuals with more severe, chronic and problematic issues, training will probably need to be longer. Longer may mean 40 or more sessions. Home training can be explored as a potential option if this is the case. Neurofeedback is being used as a tool to help children with more intractable and serious issues. These include symptoms associated with Aspergers, Autism, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Reactive Attachment Disorder, Bi-polar Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. When this is the situation, parents can expect that their child will require an extended NFB program. It may be more economical and efficient for parents to begin treatment in the office and then transition to a home training program providing the caregivers have basic computer skills. For highly motivated and computer literate parents, home training may be initiated through long distance coaching. Neurofeedback for Personal Growth and Transformation Neurofeedback is a powerful tool to shift trainees out of unhelpful patterns into more authentic ways of being. Neurofeedback trainees typically experience:
Neurofeedback may be combined with psychotherapy to support the trainee's personal growth and healing. Neurofeedback and Peak Performance Athletes, musicians, golfers, meditators, executives, and artists are all benefiting from NFB. Neurofeedback improves performance by optimizing the trainee's capacity to focus, remain calm under stressful challenges, and think more creatively from moment to moment. What is called "the zone" is just this capacity to remain calm and focused when performing a task, whether it is on the golf course or in the boardroom. Neurofeedback is being used by world class athletes and performers for performance optimization. "Neurofeedback has substantially and easily improved my ability to focus and concentrate, as well as lightening my overall outlook." --D.F., Sagamore Hills, OH "The neurofeedback helped in ways that my Zoloft didn't. It cleared up my brain fog. I was able to easily complete tasks that were just overwhelming before. It was almost too easy. It was difficult to accept that something so simple could work. I wish that this had come along sooner in my life. I feel that I wasted so much time." --Y.G., Cleveland Hts., OH "My kids have both moved up dramatically with expressive language, reading, social skills, problem solving, auditory and visual processing, no more bedwetting, word retrieval, interest in the world around them, math comprehension and measured cognitive levels. More importantly my kids can hold a conversation that makes sense, and report information sequentially and logically. The level of confusion in them has really declined and they are a lot more fun to be with. We have come a long way since they arrived here." --A.H. Chagrin Falls, OH, (Adoptive Parent) "Hello Mershona, I just really want to thank you for your support and the life changing therapy you offered for our family and especially for the difference it has made in my son Jared's life. All of our lives and relationships really. You got us out of crisis mode and into functioning stability rather quickly. We benefited greatly from your RAD therapy and from neurofeedback that my son took part in. His behaviors are much more tolerable now and a lot less in severity just in the 20 treatments he had with you. The changes were gradual but definitely noticeable. We can go out in public now, and not stand out in a crowd. We look forward to working with you further. Thank You!" --A.B. Parma, OH, (Adoptive Parent) "I did 35 sessions and can't say enough about the increase in focus, sleep changes, memory improvement, reduction in anxiety and irritability, the interesting increase in personal motivation. It was like I used to look at something and see that it needed to be done and then all of a sudden I found myself reaching out and doing it. The increase in productivity has been great. I have investigated various types of neurofeedback and satisfied myself as a user that Zengar has done the best job possible for us." --A.H. Chagrin Falls
